The Yearly Review - the millionaire tool to maximize your life

If there’s one regular habit that I know for sure has improved my own life as well as the lives of many successful people, it’s that of reflection and planning.
Regular cycles of reviews helps surface meaningful events, opportunities and ideas on how to steer your life to a better outcome. It’s about adding more conscious attention onto your life itself. To take the bird’s eye view on what is going on and to map out where you are going.
Reviews can be as often as everyday. In fact, it’s good practice to have a Daily review at the end of the day where you note down what went well and what didn’t. It’s also a good time to decide on the priorities and actions for the next day.
A weekly review makes sense as it breaks the hard 5 day sprint and can be done on the weekends, or on whatever you designate as a good review-day. It’s good to zoom out and see how you performed in a week’s chunk across the meaningful areas of your life.
The monthly review makes sense from a financial sense, as salary usually comes in monthly and bills are paid. It’s good to take stock of your trajectory towards the yearly goals you would have set out for yourself.
The quarterly review is an excellent point to examine your progress on projects. For those on a faster cycle of operating, it can be thought of as working withing 12-week years.
Finally, the Yearly Review is the grand culmination of a year’s worth of experiences and work. A significant amount of time has passed and it’s a great time to clean up the clutter and prepare for the year ahead. This coincides with earthly seasonal cycles, which often maps to different periods and kinds of activity for ourselves.
How to do a Yearly Review?
There are many ways to do a Yearly Review. For a few years I did mine in Evernote. A few years after it was Google Drive. This year it will be in Notion.
It doesn’t matter what platform you use, even if it’s just pen and paper. Sometimes the simplicity of the system is what helps you focus and bring out the deeper thinking that’s needed.
The main thing is to make sure your annual reviews are not discarded. This is valuable information about your life that your future self will find good use of. You can always refer to these notes as reference material to see your past patterns of thought, behaviour successes and failures. It also serves as excellent comparison material when trying to understand how much you might have changed over time.
Continuous Improvement
Every year my process of a Yearly Review gets more refined. I add in important questions, and remove ones that are no longer relevant.
The main thing is to find good questions for yourself. Here are some examples:
What were the highlights of this year?
What were the lowlights of this year?
What were the top 20% of people, places, activities?
How can I 10x my performance next year?
What’s a big goal that I’d like to achieve next year?
Find some questions that work for you.
I’ve shared some links to some of the best annual review and planning processes below. Find a style that suits you, and try doing one, especially if you’ve never tried one before.

PRODUCTIVITY/ LIFE/ ENTREPRENEURSHIP

While the video by Patrick Bet-David is about 4 years old, it still has a lot of timeless wisdom.
The advice can be summarized in four points, all of which are vitally important for today:
1 - Learn Sales
Sales is still the driver of business, and always will be. Without deals happening there is no commerce, no industry, no civilization. The way one goes about doing sales may vary as the technology and tools change, but at the end of the day, you are still dealing with selling things to humans, and that’s as timeless as can be.
2 - Become an Entrepreneur
This is my #1 advice to anyone and everyone these days. It is simply the best career path, for it lets you design the lifestyle you want, if you are willing to work for it and take on some risk. With the rise of the internet, the amount of opportunities in the world is more than ever.
3 - Choose the right industry
Too many people underplay this factor. The industry one goes in will mean the difference between pushing a boulder uphill or pushing one downhill. It’s more important to work on the right thing inefficiently than it is to work on the wrong thing efficiently. Spend time learning the landscape of the world, before you set out on your path. It’s the smartest move you can make.
4 - Choose the right platform
Like choosing the right street or mall to open up a shop, the right platform will be one growing in traffic and especially in traffic of the people you are looking to serve.
More than just numbers
In the video, PBD shares some of his own journey, and how the motivation to see his dad able to retire was what drove him to become massively wealthy. Once he retired his dad he saw his dad’s health return.
PBD did not have an easy life growing up. He grew up surrounded by war in Iran, before he came to America with his family while still a kid and aimed for the American dream.
It’s not just about tactics. Nobody becomes wealthy by accident. Success is achieved through the cultivation and application of strong will and desire to change one’s circumstances.
Just like PBD, you need a purpose, a desire to win.
That purpose is strongest when it is not about you.
Think about people who are meaningful to you; fight to create a better world for them.
